Five Must-Watch Big 12 Games in 2021

August 18, 2021

Hi, folks! This week we take a look at the Big 12, a storied conference with tons of tradition and blossoming offensive talent. So let’s look at — *everything’s on fire* Oh. Well. I’m sure that’s nothing, we can — *oh no, here come bloodthirsty panthers devouring everything that’s left* Ah. Got it. Texas and Oklahoma are leaving for the SEC sometime soon. Well, surely whatever’s left will — *oh no the panthers are on fire and everything’s dissolving into existential nonsense* I’m sure everything will be fine. Eventually. Maybe. This year, at least, the Big 12 will play on. . . .

Big 12 Sneaky Stats & Unexpected Challengers

August 16, 2021

The 2021 College Football season is almost upon us! Only two more previews to go in this Sneaky Stats series before Week 1 kicks off! If you missed the first three installments you can find the SEC here, the Big Ten here, and the ACC right here. This week, we’ll take a look at the Big 12 (technically Big 8 now, I guess) Conference! Can anyone challenge Oklahoma? Is Iowa State a legit playoff contender? Is Texas back? All that and more, right here! First off–and I promise this doesn’t give everything away up top here–it would be fair to . . .

Five Must-Watch SEC Games in 2021

August 11, 2021

It’s time to discuss the 800-pound gorilla in the room. Over the past several weeks, the SEC has asserted its dominance as the most competitive, loaded conference out there. In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, Texas and Oklahoma are primed to exit the Big 12 and join the big boys in the SEC. Our own Bradley Hohulin put together a set of guidelines for any other schools who might be interested as well. On the one hand, I’m happy to see another opportunity for Oklahoma to compete with top-tier teams rather than winning every Big 12 football title. . . .

SEC Sneaky Stats and Unexpected Challengers

August 9, 2021

If you have already checked out the first two editions of this Sneaky Stats series (here or here), you may be noticing a pattern by now. There are quite a few intriguing, unexpected challengers in every single Power Five Conference this year who could rise to dethrone the king from its dominance. The SEC is no exception. Don’t believe it? Let’s dive into it by the numbers. Despite the common perception that Alabama is an undefeatable behemoth that only foolish SEC programs would challenge, recent history tells us otherwise. Yes, Alabama is coming off another National Championship, but they have . . .

So, You Want to Join the SEC?

August 6, 2021

Welcome, new initiates, one and all. This is the Southeastern Conference, and we’re stoked to have you. At least, we’re stoked to consider you. We can’t let in everybody, obviously. With the fall season about to kick off, schools are rushing to find the houses that will give them the best chance to form lifelong friendships, make priceless memories, and absolutely tear up the party scene. For college football, there’s no more elite fraternity than the SEC. Other conferences want to be us. Schools want to be in us. But before we can get to the fun stuff, there are . . .

Five Must-Watch Big Ten Games in 2021

August 4, 2021

It’s time to talk about the conference of BEEF. Every conference has a reputation, a brand, an identity. When I say “Big Ten,” you, dear reader, probably think power running, unyielding defense, and gargantuan linemen – three yards and a cloud of dust. And sure, we’ve got plenty of that on tap. But the B1G, full of Legends and Leaders (I will never let that nonsense go) is much more than that. After a virus-impacted six-game season that should have been ten or twelve (I will never let that nonsense go either), we’ve got whole squads returning with a solid . . .

Big Ten Sneaky Stats and Unexpected Challengers

August 2, 2021

Just like the ACC, the Big Ten has been dominated by the same team for over a decade. Ohio State has won 11 conference championships since 2005. The closest in Big Ten titles in that same span is actually a tie between Penn State, Wisconsin, and Michigan State with three. Michigan has zero. (Sorry Maize & Blue fans.) But again, can anyone challenge the king? Recent history would lean towards “no” but there’s a chance for several teams to compete. Wisconsin has posted an average of 2.86 wins above expected per season given their recruiting rank and total victories in . . .

10 Things I Hate About Big Ten Football

July 30, 2021

Raised in Ohio, I grew up watching primarily Big Ten football. As much as I enjoy the heartland’s premiere Power Five conference, it’s not always fun for us Midwesterners. “Oh, for Pete’s sake,” we grumble in our outdoor voices, brows furrowed in mild annoyance. As the 2021 season approaches, so do the Big Ten’s least charming quirks. Let’s take a page from Julia Stiles’ tear-jerking poem recitation in the 1999 classic 10 Things I Hate About You to better understand why, sometimes, I just can’t stand the Big Ten. 1. Adding Rutgers and Maryland because cash is king, baby Complaining . . .
