August Countdown: North Carolina (21)

August 7, 2009

Throughout August, we will be counting down the top 25 teams (as listed here) going into the 2009 season. Today we climb the Chapel Hill and take a closer look at North Carolina. Fun fact: notable UNC alumni include Dan Cortese, Andy Griffith, and Dr. Ken Jeong.            First Impressions To be honest, ever since UNC hired Butch Davis, I’ve had the Tar Heels as a sleeping giant in the back of my mind. The recent tradition isn’t necessarily there, but their recruiting base of states in the Southern and Mid-Atlantic states is obviously rock solid.  . . .

August Countdown: BYU (22)

August 5, 2009

Throughout August, we will be counting down the top 25 teams (as listed here) going into the 2009 season.  Today, we delve into BYU, our second Utah team in as many days.  It’s apparently Utah Week here at the Solid Verbal.  Apologies to Discovery Channel for upstaging Shark Week. First Impressions It is apparent after looking at BYU‘s 2009 schedule that the Cougars athletic department picked this season as the year it could potentially make a BCS splash.  Despite a shaky Mountain West schedule, which, as usual, features only Utah and TCU, the Cougs scheduled a neutral site game with . . .

August Countdown: Utah Utes (23)

August 5, 2009

Throughout August, we will be counting down the top 25 teams (as listed here) going into the 2009 season. Today we bring it on down to Utahville, where we’ll take a look at the only program to go undefeated twice in the BCS era. Another fun fact:, Utah is the only state in the union to have their nickname centered around the production and storage of honey. I love honey.                First Impressions A case could be made that this has been the Offseason of Utah. You could also consider Lane Kiffin and Tennessee, but . . .

August Countdown: Oregon State Beavers (24)

August 3, 2009

Throughout August, we will be counting down the top 25 teams (as listed here) going into the 2009 season.  Today, we travel to the metropolis of Corvallis, Oregon, which boasts the slogan “Business is Good Here”, calls itself a “bike-friendly city”, and is known as the “fifth smartest city in America” according to a recent study by Forbes magazine.  So, it’s got that going for it, which is nice. First Impression Dan Rubenstein hates beavers.  All of them.  Especially ones from Oregon State.  We don’t want PETA dishing out any DDOS attacks on SolidVerbal.com, but in the interest of full . . .

August Countdown: The Iowa Hawkeyes (25)

August 3, 2009

Beginning today, we will be counting down the top 25 teams (as listed here) going into the 2009 season. We begin with Iowa, whose state bird is the Carduelis tristis, or the American goldfinch. Not a hawk. Go figure. First Impression Iowa always feels like one of those teams that’s either better or worse than expected, which technically makes the Hawkeyes guilty only of not building on previous success or simply underperforming and then performing to their capable level. Even I’m confused after writing that sentence. Also, does Iowa really need to do everything it can to lock up Kirk . . .
