We’ve joked in these parts for years about the college football world’s obsession with foreign-born punters. Notre Dame fans: Rejoice! It’s your turn.

Meet James Rendell, the Australian nicknamed “Thor” who will step in and handle punting duties this fall for Marcus Freeman. Rendell comes from Australian Rules footballing royalty, as his late father Matt was one of the the all-time greats, scoring 147 goals in 256 games over a career that ran from 1977-1992.

Like many Australians who have found their way onto the college football field, James trained at the prestigious Prokick Australia, which specializes in developing elite punters from the American game. He’ll have an opportunity to contribute right away for the Irish.
