Sneaky Stats for Week 4 of the 2022 College Football Season

Welcome to the Week 4 edition of the 2022 Sneaky Stats series! If you joined us the for the first few weeks or at all last year, you already know the drill. The Sneaky Stats series is your one-stop shop for all the most intriguing, predictive, goofy, and perhaps “sneaky” stats that define the biggest matchups of the college football season.

But before we dive into Week 4 Sneaky Stats, let’s take a quick look back at the insane Week 3 action. We saw a coach potentially fired on the field, wildly dominant blowouts, and some impressive breakouts for surprise programs. What a week!

College Football Week 3

Another week, another instance of Jimbo Fisher doubling down on his archaic offensive approach! Texas A&M dominated the contest against a very good Miami (FL) team by nearly every measure, but the game was still uncomfortably close for the Aggies at 17-9. How in the world could that happen when Texas A&M held Miami (FL) to zero touchdowns and won the turnover margin, you might ask? The Aggies (yet again) decided to run one of the slowest paces in all of football at any level, just to make sure the game was interesting for fans, I guess. They ran a total of just 52 plays the entire game, bringing their total on the season to 157 through three weeks of action. That’s good for 52.33 plays per game, or a full 17.67 plays below average and 45 fewer plays per game than the fastest offenses in college right now. When you mix that with the exhilarating aerial attack from quarterback Max Johnson who on average targets receivers a whopping 6.3 yards down field you get one of the most boring, unwatchable, disgraceful messes of what some might have called an offense 15+ years ago. Good luck against the SEC with that nonsense, Aggies!

Florida State looked like it might be in big trouble after quarterback Jordan Travis left the game with an injury following a sack in the second quarter against Louisville. But in his absence the Seminoles had a huge player in particular step in a huge way that saved the game. I emphasize huge because Johnny Wilson is a 6’7″, 235-pound monster of a wide receiver. After Travis left the game, Wilson accounted for 40% of the total offensive yards and two out of the three touchdowns for the Noles, just absolutely mossing defenders on multiple plays. He finished with seven receptions for 149 yards and two scores overall. One of the best performances of any wide receiver in the nation this week. This former four-star stud recruit and Arizona State transfer may be the skeleton key to unlocking Florida State’s offensive ceiling moving forward!
