Ty and Dan talk about the crisis at Penn State and break down all the relevant Week 11 action. (Note: A special Oregon-Stanford show coming on Thursday.)

The Solid Verbal is a twice-weekly college football podcast started in 2008 by Ty Hildenbrandt and Dan Rubenstein. The show continues through the regular season, post-season, and off-season, because people don’t just watch college football, they live it.
Agreed - the scope of this tragedy is so large, I *highly* suggest a special Penn State show next week. By then, the scandal will be a week old (meaning - everyone has had ample time to reflect, digest the facts), Ty can give full recount of the vibe around campus, get thoughts from respected journalists, etc.
I agree with the previous two comments that we should call this child rape. Sandusky is a pedophile (obviously), and Administrators/Paterno were complicit in minimizing damage to the university with the externality being protecting a pedophile within their organization. Legally who knows what happens, or how deep this goes, or why that District Attorney disappeared in 2005, etc, etc, etc, etc. Lots of questions... While I do think Dan/Ty could devote a show to this, I don't think it should be done unless they can get several people to interview. Obviously people within Penn State will be not saying much, but if they can get some good journalists working on the story, perhaps an alum, and a student or two to discuss things, lawyers familiar with the case, etc, with it could be an award winning show that shows the scope and emotions/ramifications and gravity of the situation. If it's just them talking to each other endlessly about the issue, or bringing in some vapid sensationalist like Staples, then we could probably do without.
I feel like you guys should do a special podcast on this issue. Granted I'm an Ohio State alum, but I'm so embarrased for Penn State fans and alums right now because of what happened tonight. Some of those people out there last night may not have been Penn State students but some of them were. And what we saw were people out there rioting, literally in support of a child rape enabler. I agree with Adam, we should call this what it is. All I can say is that youtube and facebook will be around and when those kids have kids of their own I hope they remember this night and the message they sent. The way I look at it is like this. Joe Paterno was the God King of that school, and to an extent that state. He could and should have put that monster away in 2002. But he didn't, he failed in his moral obligation to protect those children. Should McQueary have done something when he saw that act in the shower? Of course. But that still doesn't excuse Paterno's lack of action. This whole thing is the result of men not doing what's right. So, in my mind of course Sandusky is the real monster here, but Joe Paterno, McQueary, Spanier, and the rest all failed and desrved to lose their jobs and whatever other consequences may come their way. People are arguing that Joe Paterno did was he was supposed to, and he did. He did the bare minimum. Is that what we expect from "legendary" men? I'm just so discgusted by the whole thing. By Sandusky, by Paterno and the Penn State administartion, and by these apologists who are willing to excuse the inaction of men to let something evil happen in the name of a football program.
I would like to make a few comments regarding the PSU issue. I'm annoyed by the reference to it as a "child sexual abuse scandal" by most media outlets. We need to speak openly and honestly about these things as a society... to disinfect with sunlight. This is a child Rape scandal. We need to use the word. It is accurate, it is uncomfortable, it is honest. As for Joe Pa, and everyone else involved in the program and/or administration who knew about this- they deserve to be fired and live the rest of their lives in shame until the day their pathetic existence ends. Paterno no longer deserves to "go out on his own terms". His legacy should be: "Won a bunch of football games, helped conceal and aid Child Rape for at least the better part of a decade, if not longer." The thought that he, or anyone else within the program that knew isn't a spineless scumbag because they "followed the appropriate chain of commend" is garbage. Laws are what they are, that isn't as important. Be a human being. STOP IT! None of these people stopped it. Call the police! Be a man, and make sure it gets done. I'm sure Joe Pa talked a lot about accountability. Well, he needs to be accountable for the decade-plus of child rapes he allowed Sandusky to commit. He let that bastard have a key? HE KNEW! all these people that knew just let it keep happening. Pathetic. Oh, and invoking his grandkids... disgusting. If he ever wanted to set a positive example of any real meaning, of any true substance- I would guess calling the police on a CHILD RAPIST would probably be something of value. Also, the miserable old bastard said, when referencing the victims "that they got into". Way to semantically blame the victims. I sure hope that's not what he meant, but for someone who is such a fervent supporter of libraries, and who has, in reality-had over a decade to plan this statement-that was some pretty poor word choice. They all deserve to be gone. Don't sugar coat it- these people all concealed the raping of children, and let him continue to use their "brand" to continue farming victims. Of course, Sandusky has a special place in hell reserved for him. I'd condemn him more, but clearly he is not a person as much as a monster. Thus he should be expelled from this world as expeditiously as possible and locked into a tiny cell until the day his wretched life ends. He is disgusting. But what is truly infuriating is the lack of honor amongst these men at Penn State who knew, and not only did nothing to stop the raping of these young boys, but contributed to its continuation by allowing the monster access to their facilities.
